Ingredients List

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
  • 8 small tortillas (corn or flour)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Chicken: Begin by cutting the chicken breasts or thighs into strips or small pieces, depending on your preference. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cumin.
  • Set Up the Breading Station: In three separate bowls, place the flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs (or panko). Dredge each piece of chicken in flour, dip it in the eggs, and then coat it with breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs onto the chicken to ensure they adhere well.
  • Fry the Chicken: Heat about 1 inch of oil in a frying pan or skillet over medium heat. Once the oil reaches 350°F (175°C), carefully add the breaded chicken pieces to the pan, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the chicken for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Use tongs to flip the chicken and ensure even cooking.
  • Drain the Chicken: Once the chicken is cooked, transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. If you’re making a large batch, you can keep the chicken warm on a baking sheet in a 200°F (95°C) oven while you finish frying the rest.
  • Warm the Tortillas: While the chicken is frying, warm the tortillas in a dry skillet or directly over a gas flame until they are soft and pliable.
  • Assemble the Tacos: To assemble the tacos, place a few pieces of crispy chicken in the center of each tortilla. Add your desired toppings, such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced avocado, shredded cheese, and sliced jalapeños. Drizzle with your favorite sauce and a squeeze of lime juice.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Serve the crispy chicken tacos immediately, while the chicken is still hot and crispy. Pair with a side of rice, beans, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Experiment with Toppings: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your toppings. Beyond the usual lettuce, tomato, and cheese, consider adding pickled onions, radishes, or a spicy slaw. These additions can bring new flavors and textures to your crispy chicken tacos.
  • Make it Spicy: If you love heat, try adding a spicy element to your tacos. You can mix some hot sauce or sriracha into your mayo, add sliced jalapeños, or sprinkle the chicken with cayenne pepper before breading.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Freshness is key to making the most delicious tacos. Use ripe tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and freshly made sauces to ensure your tacos are vibrant and full of flavor.
  • Serve Immediately: Crispy chicken tacos are best enjoyed right after they’re assembled to maintain the crunchiness of the chicken and the freshness of the toppings. If you’re preparing for a crowd, consider setting up a taco bar where everyone can assemble their tacos as they please.
