Description

These Tennessee Onions are a Southern comfort classic—sweet onions layered with Cajun seasoning, garlic, and three kinds of cheese, then baked until bubbly and golden. Buttery, cheesy, and full of savory flavor, they’re the perfect side dish for grilled meats, holiday dinners, or anytime you want a bold, crowd-pleasing recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 sweet onions, sliced into ¼-inch rings
  • 1½ teaspoons Cajun seasoning (or more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Layer Onions
Arrange half of the sliced onions in a 9x13-inch casserole dish. Sprinkle with half of the Cajun seasoning and garlic powder.

  • Repeat Layers
Add the remaining onion slices, seasoning, and garlic powder in another even layer.

  • Add Butter and Cheese
Distribute butter slices over the top of the onions. Sprinkle evenly with cheddar and mozzarella cheese.

  • Top with Herbs and Parmesan
Sprinkle oregano and Parmesan cheese over the top.

  • Bake
Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden around the edges.

  • Cool and Serve
Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the cheese to set and juices to absorb.

Notes

  • Use Vidalia, Walla Walla, or another sweet variety for best flavor.
  • For spicier flavor, add more Cajun seasoning or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Freshly grated cheese melts smoother than pre-shredded.
  • Add crumbled bacon or sliced sausage to turn this into a main dish.
  • Leftovers reheat well and make a great topping for burgers or baked potatoes.
