Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ½ to 1 tsp garlic salt (or to taste)
  • 2 (10.5 oz) cans beef consommé
  • 2 (10.5 oz) cans French onion soup
  • ¾ cup water
  • 2 cups long-grain white rice (uncooked, not instant rice)
  • ¾ cup butter (1 ½ sticks, cut into slices)

Optional Additions:

  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (Swiss, Mozzarella, or Provolone) for a cheesy version
  • Crispy fried onions or crispy jalapeños for a crunchy topping

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add ground beef and garlic salt, cooking until browned and fully crumbled.
  • Drain excess grease and remove from heat.

Step 3: Assemble the Casserole

  • Spread uncooked rice evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  • Add the browned ground beef on top of the rice.
  • Pour in beef consommé, French onion soup, and water.
  • Stir everything together for even distribution.

Step 4: Add Butter

  • Cut ¾ cup butter into slices and place them evenly over the mixture.

Step 5: Bake the Casserole

  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake uncovered for another 30 minutes, allowing the rice to absorb the liquid and develop a slight crust.

Step 6: Fluff and Serve

  • Once done, fluff the rice with a fork to mix everything evenly.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Cheesy Topping:

  • Remove the casserole from the oven 10 minutes before it’s done.
  • Sprinkle 1 ½ cups shredded cheese over the top.
  • Return to the oven and bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Crunchy Topping:

  • After baking, sprinkle crispy fried onions or crispy jalapeños on top.
  • Place under the broiler for 3-5 minutes until golden and crispy.
