Ingredients List

To create the perfect crab cakes, gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 pound of fresh lump crab meat
  • 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs (Panko or regular)
  • 1/4 cup of mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of butter or oil for frying

Instructions

Step 1: Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the crab meat, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, beaten egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay seasoning, lemon juice, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to break up the crab meat too much.

Step 2: Form Patties

Using your hands or a scoop, form the mixture into 8 equal-sized patties. Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps the patties hold together during cooking.

Step 3: Chill Patties

Refrigerating the patties is a crucial step. It helps them firm up, which prevents them from falling apart while frying. If you’re short on time, placing them in the freezer for about 15 minutes can also work.

Step 4: Cook Patties

Heat the butter or oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the crab cakes to the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if necessary.

Step 5: Serve

Transfer the cooked crab cakes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or aioli.

Notes

  • Handle with care: Be gentle when mixing and forming the patties to maintain the crab meat’s texture.
  • Balance the seasoning: Use enough seasoning to enhance the crab flavor without overpowering it.
  • Test before serving: Cook a small test patty first to check for seasoning and texture adjustments.
