Ingredients List

Main Ingredients:

  • 8 oz chickpea pasta (penne, rotini, spaghetti, etc.)
  • 46 cups water (depending on pasta type)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, to prevent sticking)

Instructions

  • Boil the Water: Fill a large pot with 4-6 cups of water (depending on the amount of pasta). Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat.
  • Add the Pasta: Once the water is boiling, add the chickpea pasta to the pot. Stir immediately to prevent the pasta from sticking together.
  • Cook the Pasta: Cook the pasta according to the package instructions, usually for 7-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and to prevent sticking. Begin checking for doneness at the 7-minute mark by tasting a piece of pasta.
  • Drain the Pasta: When the pasta is cooked to your desired tenderness, drain it in a colander. If you prefer, you can reserve a cup of the pasta cooking water to use in your sauce.
  • Toss with Sauce: If you’re serving the pasta with sauce, return the drained pasta to the pot or a mixing bowl. Add your desired sauce and toss to coat the pasta evenly. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a bit of the reserved pasta water to thin it out.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Serve the chickpea pasta hot, topped with your favorite add-ins like vegetables, protein, cheese, or fresh herbs. Enjoy your nutritious, protein-packed meal!

Notes

  • Experiment with Sauces: Chickpea pasta pairs well with a variety of sauces. While marinara, pesto, and Alfredo are classic choices, don’t hesitate to try something new, like a spicy arrabbiata, creamy avocado sauce, or a light lemon-garlic sauce. The slightly nutty flavor of chickpea pasta complements both robust and subtle sauces.
  • Add a Crunch: For added texture, sprinkle your dish with toasted breadcrumbs, chopped nuts, or seeds. This can provide a delightful contrast to the smooth pasta and sauce, making your meal more interesting and satisfying.
  • Serve Immediately: Chickpea pasta is best served right after cooking. If left to sit, it can absorb more sauce and become softer. To avoid this, prepare your sauce and toppings in advance so you can mix and serve the pasta as soon as it’s ready.
  • Dress It Up: Elevate your chickpea pasta dish with fresh herbs like basil, parsley, or thyme. A drizzle of high-quality olive oil or a squeeze of lemon juice can also enhance the overall flavor, adding brightness and freshness.
