Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients List

  • 1 pound cipollini onions, peeled
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions: Slice off the root end and carefully peel the onions. Cut each onion into eighths, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  • Marinate the Onions: Soak the onions in a mixture of buttermilk and eggs for 5-10 minutes.
  • Coat the Onions: Dredge the onions in a flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.
  • Fry the Onions: Heat the oil to 350°F and fry the onions for about 4 minutes until golden brown. Alternatively, air fry at 380°F for 12 minutes.
  • Prepare the Dipping Sauce: Mix all dipping sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  • Serve: Serve the bite-sized blooming onions hot with the dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Tips and Notes: Keep the oil temperature consistent for perfect frying. Prepare the onions a day in advance to streamline the cooking process.
  • Storing: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in an oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes to retain crispiness. Avoid microwaving as it can make them soggy.
