Description

This air fryer blooming onion recipe is the perfect appetizer for any occasion. Made with wholesome ingredients and cooked with minimal oil, it delivers the same crispy, flavorful experience of a restaurant-style blooming onion without the guilt.


Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • Olive or avocado oil spray
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F for 3 minutes.
  2. Slice off the top of the onion and peel away the outer skin. Cut the onion into 16 evenly spaced sections, leaving the root intact. Gently separate the petals.
  3. Mix the flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, thyme, and oregano in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and almond milk.
  4. Coat the onion in the flour mixture, dip it in the egg wash, then re-coat in flour.
  5. Chill the coated onion in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
  6. Spray the onion with oil and place it in the air fryer on a foil sling. Cook at 350°F for 25 minutes, spraying with oil 2-3 times during cooking.
  7. Remove carefully, season with salt and pepper, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

  • Use sweet onions like Vidalia for the best flavor.
  • For extra spice, add more cayenne pepper.
  • To make it vegan, replace eggs with flaxseed slurry and use plant-based milk.
